Pastoral Responsibility and Farewell Warning (Acts 20:26-31)

Scripture: Acts 20:26-31

Today’s Word

26 Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.
27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.
28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.
29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.
30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.
31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

Background

Paul is having his final meeting with the elders of the Ephesian church in Miletus. He knows he will never see them again as he journeys toward Jerusalem. This scene is similar to a teacher giving final important instructions to graduating students.
Paul ministered in Ephesus for about three years, which was the longest period he stayed in one place. He loved this church and was concerned about its future. He especially anticipated that people would come to harm the church after his departure.
The church at that time faced various threats. From outside, there was persecution from both Jews and Gentiles, and from inside, there was danger of false teachers appearing to deceive believers. Paul emphasizes how crucial the role of church leaders is in this situation.

Key Terms Made Simple

  • Overseers: People responsible for caring for the church. Similar to today’s pastors or elders. Not simply people with authority, but those who care for believers like shepherds care for sheep.
  • Flock: Refers to the believers in the church. Sheep are vulnerable and easily lost, needing the shepherd’s protection and guidance. This expression means that believers also need spiritual care.
  • Savage wolves: A metaphorical expression for false teachers or evil influences that try to harm the church. Since wolves attack and harm sheep, this refers to people who cause harm to the church.
  • Distort the truth: Changing or incorrectly teaching God’s Word according to one’s own wishes. Not just lying, but gradually changing the truth to lead people down the wrong path.
  • Be on your guard: Being spiritually alert and careful. It doesn’t mean not sleeping, but living with constant attention and vigilance.
