Scripture: Acts 27:9-19
Today’s Word
Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. (Acts 27:9-11, NIV)
When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island. The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along. (Acts 27:13-15, NIV)
Background
Paul’s ship was on its way to Rome. During this time, sailing in the Mediterranean became dangerous after mid-September, and nearly all ships stopped sailing from November to March. The “Day of Atonement” mentioned in the text refers to Yom Kippur, the Jewish holy day that falls between late September and early October. The fact that this period had already passed meant they had entered the dangerous sailing season.
Fair Havens on the island of Crete was a small harbor unsuitable for wintering. The pilot and owner wanted to reach Phoenix, a better harbor. However, Mediterranean weather was unpredictable, and favorable winds could suddenly turn into violent storms.
Key Terms Made Simple
-
Day of Atonement: Refers to Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of repentance. On this day, people confess their sins before God and fast all day without eating. It falls between late September and early October, and after this time, Mediterranean sailing becomes very dangerous.
-
Centurion: An officer in the Roman army who commanded 100 soldiers. This centurion was responsible for escorting Paul to Rome.
-
Northeaster: The name for a strong northeastern storm wind in the Mediterranean. It combines “Euro” (east wind) and “Aquilo” (north wind), referring to a dangerous storm that strikes suddenly and makes ships uncontrollable.
-
Anchor: A heavy iron tool lowered to the bottom to keep a ship in one place. It’s used when docking at harbor or when encountering a storm to prevent the ship from drifting away.
Key Expressions to Notice
-
“Paul warned them”
-
“But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship”
-
“When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity”
-
“The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind”
Main Points of the Text
-
Ignoring Paul’s Warning (vv. 9-12): Though it was a dangerous time to sail, people wanted to reach a better harbor. Paul warned of danger, but the centurion followed the experts’ opinions. They chose worldly wisdom over the warning of God’s servant.
-
The Beginning of Deception (v. 13): When the south wind blew favorably, people thought their judgment was correct. A brief period of smooth sailing clouded their spiritual discernment. We too easily become proud and forget God’s guidance when things go well.
-
The Storm’s Attack (vv. 14-19): Suddenly the Northeaster struck and the ship became completely uncontrollable. People desperately threw cargo overboard and even the ship’s equipment into the sea. It was a moment when all human effort and wisdom became useless.
Applying to My Life
-
Listening to God’s Warnings: Paul’s warning wasn’t just personal opinion but wisdom given by God. In our lives too, God warns us through Scripture, prayer, and godly counselors. The world’s rational judgment isn’t always right. When making important decisions, I need to reflect on whether I’m seeking God’s voice.
-
Not Being Deceived by Smooth Sailing: The moment the south wind blew, people were deceived into thinking everything would be fine. We too easily forget God and overestimate our plans and abilities when things go well. We need to depend on God with humility, especially during smooth times.
-
Depending on God in Crisis: When the storm came, people had to let go of everything. Sometimes God makes us put down everything we’ve been depending on and grasp only Him. Crisis can become a tool that draws us closer to God.
Think About It
-
When making important decisions, do I trust the world’s rational judgment or God’s Word more? Have I ever ignored God’s warning and pushed ahead with my own plans?
-
When things go smoothly, do I approach God with thanksgiving and humility, or do I become overconfident in my abilities and judgment?
-
In the storms of my life, what am I holding onto that I can’t let go? What is God telling me to put down?
