More Blessed to Give Than to Receive (Acts 20:32-35)

Scripture: Acts 20:32-35

Today’s Word

32 “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.
34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.
35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'”
(Acts 20:32-35, NIV)

Background

Paul is having his final meeting with the elders of the Ephesian church at Miletus. On his way to Jerusalem, he has called them together to reflect on his ministry methods and life attitude, leaving final instructions for the leaders who will guide the church going forward. This passage is the concluding part of Paul’s farewell sermon, concisely showing the principles and values he maintained throughout his life of ministry.
In the first-century Roman Empire, it was common for religious leaders to receive financial support from their followers. However, Paul worked as a tentmaker to provide for his own living. This was to avoid any financial motive or suspicion in preaching the gospel. Paul’s attitude became a great example for early church leaders.

Key Terms Made Simple

  • Word of grace: The message about God’s freely given salvation and love. It refers to the gospel received not through human effort but as God’s gift.
  • Inheritance: Property or legacy received through succession, but here it means the eternal blessings and rewards to be received in God’s kingdom.
  • Example: A model or good demonstration that others can follow and learn from. Paul lived in such a way that his life itself became a teaching.
  • The weak: A comprehensive term for those who are economically disadvantaged, physically sick, or socially marginalized.
