Your Calling Is Your Identity (Romans 1:1-7)
Today’s Word
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God—
2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David,
4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.
6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Background
Romans is a letter Paul wrote to the church in Rome. Interestingly, Paul had never actually visited this church—he was writing to people he had never met. That is why he opens the letter by carefully introducing who he is and what the gospel he preaches really is.
In Paul’s day, letters usually began with a brief greeting: “From so-and-so, to so-and-so, greetings.” But Paul packed his entire life into that short opening. In a single sentence of self-introduction he used three descriptions: a “servant,” one “called to be an apostle,” and one “set apart for the gospel.” This reveals how Paul understood himself at the deepest level.
One crucial point stands out here: for Paul, “who I am” (identity) determined “how I will live” (life). Because he understood himself as a servant, an apostle, and one set apart, his daily life naturally became a life of proclaiming the gospel. The moment we grasp our calling afresh, our lives open into a whole new dimension.
Key Terms Made Simple
- Servant: Someone who belongs to a master. Rather than living by his own agenda, a servant lives according to the master’s will. Paul called himself a servant of Jesus.
- Apostle: Literally “one who is sent.” A person Jesus personally commissioned to proclaim the gospel.
- Gospel: Literally “good news.” The news that Jesus came for us, died, and rose again.
- Set apart (chosen): To be dedicated for a special purpose. Paul was specifically set apart by God for the work of proclaiming the gospel.
- Gentiles: All the peoples who are not Jewish. Paul was called to bring the gospel to them.
- Obedience: Hearing God’s word and living it out.
Key Expressions to Notice
- “a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle”
- Paul introduces himself not by his job or achievements, but by his calling.
- Who I am depends not on what I have accomplished, but on what God has called me to be.
- “set apart for the gospel of God”
- Paul’s life had a clear purpose: the gospel.
- Being set apart is not a privilege but an entrusted mission.
- “to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith”
- A calling has direction. It does not stay inside the church—it reaches toward people who have not yet heard the gospel.
- It reminds me that my own calling points “beyond myself, toward someone else.”
- “And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ”
- This calling was not given only to special people like Paul.
- Everyone who believes in Jesus is described as one who is “called.”
Main Points of the Text
- Paul finds his identity in his calling. Servant, apostle, set apart—all of these are the result of God calling him.
- The center of the gospel is Jesus Christ. He came as a descendant of David, and his resurrection revealed him as the Son of God.
- This calling is given not only to Paul but to everyone who believes the gospel. We too are called to “belong to Jesus Christ.”
Applying to My Life
- What do I introduce myself by? Not grades, appearance, or achievements, but “how God has called me”—that is how I can see myself.
- A life of sharing God’s heart flows in three directions: (1) proclaiming the gospel through my life, (2) hearing God’s voice daily and obeying, and (3) living as God’s person right where I am. Practice one of these today.
- A calling does not stay inside the church walls. It reaches into my school, workplace, and friendships—especially toward those who have never yet heard of God’s love.
Think About It
- If, like Paul, I had to introduce myself in a single sentence, what “calling” would I use to describe myself?
- What I do differently today changes my life tomorrow. What is one small action I could begin today in response to my calling?
- Is there a lonely person around me who has never once heard that God loves them? What is the smallest first step I could take to reach them?
