Hospitality on Malta and the Viper Incident (Acts 28:1-6)

Scripture: Acts 28:1-6

Today’s Word

Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.” But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. (Acts 28:1-6, NIV)

Background

After enduring 14 days of violent storms and a shipwreck, Paul and 276 survivors finally reached the island of Malta (Melite). This small island is located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, about 100 kilometers south of Sicily. At that time, Malta was part of the Roman Empire, and most of its inhabitants were descendants of Phoenicians.
The hospitality shown by the islanders to 276 shipwrecked strangers in cold winter rain was remarkable. They immediately built a fire to warm the survivors who were shivering in wet clothes. The phrase “unusual kindness” indicates that their hospitality went beyond mere duty—it was genuine, heartfelt care.
The viper incident dramatically changed the islanders’ perception of Paul. People in the Mediterranean region at that time believed that being bitten by a venomous snake was divine judgment. There was a superstitious belief that if someone survived a shipwreck but was then bitten by a snake, the goddess “Justice” (Dike in Greek mythology) was punishing that person for their crimes.
