Walking in the Light (1 John 1:5-10)
Scripture: 1 John 1:5-10
Today’s Word
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:5-10, NIV)
Background
In the previous verses, John proclaimed the gospel as a witness who personally experienced Jesus Christ. Now he explains God’s nature and how we should live.
The Gnostics of that time completely separated the soul and body. They claimed, “Only the soul matters; the body doesn’t,” and taught that sins committed in the body don’t affect the soul. Because of this thinking, some people lived licentious lives while still believing they had fellowship with God.
Conversely, some people claimed to be perfect and said they were without sin. This was also pride and self-deception.
John criticizes both of these extreme attitudes. He begins with the declaration “God is light” and emphasizes that those who have fellowship with God, who is light, must necessarily walk in the light. At the same time, he proclaims the gospel truth that when we acknowledge and confess that we are sinners, God faithfully forgives us.
Key Terms Made Simple
- God is light: In the Bible, light symbolizes holiness, truth, purity, and goodness. It means God is completely holy and there is no evil or falsehood in Him.
- Walk in darkness: This means living in sin and falsehood. Light and darkness are expressions that contrast good and evil, truth and lies.
- Walk in the light: This means living honestly and holy according to God’s will. It’s not just the negative meaning of not sinning, but the positive meaning of living according to truth while resembling God’s character.
- Confess our sins: This means honestly acknowledging and speaking our wrongs before God. This goes beyond simply admitting mistakes and includes repentance—turning back to God.
Key Expressions to Notice
- “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (verse 5)
- This is a declaration about God’s nature. God is absolutely holy and pure. No sin, evil, falsehood, or unrighteousness can exist in Him. This declaration becomes the standard for how we should live.
- “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie” (verse 6)
- John is very direct. He says it’s contradictory and false to claim relationship with God while continuing to live a sinful life. True faith necessarily accompanies transformation in life.
- “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” (verse 7)
- Walking in the light brings two results. First is genuine fellowship with other believers, and second is forgiveness of sins through Jesus’ blood. Individual holiness and community fellowship cannot be separated.
- “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins” (verse 9)
- This is an amazing promise. Because God is faithful and righteous, He will surely forgive us when we confess our sins. Forgiveness doesn’t depend on God’s mood or our works, but is based on Jesus Christ’s work on the cross.
Main Points of the Text
- God’s Nature: Light (verse 5)
- The core of the message John heard from Jesus is “God is light.” This means God is completely holy, truthful, and pure. In God there is no darkness—no sin, evil, or falsehood at all. This declaration becomes the foundation for what kind of relationship we should have with God and how we should live.
- Walk in the Light (verses 6-7)
- It’s false to claim fellowship with God while living in darkness (sin). Those who truly have fellowship with God must walk in the light—living holy and truthfully. Two things happen when we walk in the light. First, we share genuine fellowship with other believers. Second, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. This is not because we’re perfect, but because we strive to live in the light and depend on Jesus’ grace whenever we stumble.
- Confess Your Sins (verses 8-10)
- John warns against two extremes. The first is claiming “I have no sin.” This is self-deception and evidence that truth is not in that person. The second is saying “I have not sinned.” This makes God out to be a liar, because God has said all people are sinners. The right attitude is to honestly confess our sins. When we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will surely forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Applying to My Life
- Living Consistently
- Do I claim to believe in God with my mouth but treat sin lightly in actual life? Am I devout on Sundays but live no differently from worldly people from Monday on? Relationship with God isn’t just for Sundays but encompasses all of daily life. We must walk in the light at school, at home, and when with friends.
- Honestly Acknowledging Sin
- When I make mistakes or do wrong, do I make excuses or try to hide them? Am I rationalizing with thoughts like “This much is okay,” “Everyone else does it too,” or “I’m not that bad of a person”? We must be honest before God. When we honestly confess our sins, God will surely forgive us.
- Living in Grace
- Walking in the light doesn’t mean striving for perfection. We still stumble and fail. But the blood of Jesus continually cleanses us. When we sin, we shouldn’t despair but immediately come to God, confess, and receive forgiveness. This is living in grace.
Think About It
- How does the declaration “God is light” affect my daily life? Am I taking God’s holiness seriously?
- Are there areas where I claim relationship with God but actually live in sin? In what areas do my words and actions not align?
- How do I respond when I sin? Do I hide and make excuses, or do I confess honestly? Am I confident in God’s forgiveness?
