Sowing Seeds with Faith in the Unseen Harvest (Acts 22:12-16)
Scripture: Acts 22:12-16
Today’s Word
12 “A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13 He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him. 14 “Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’ (NIV)
Background
Paul is defending himself before the Jewish crowd that wants to kill him, speaking in Hebrew. He shares his testimony of how he met Jesus and was transformed. Today’s passage describes when Ananias, a disciple, delivered God’s calling to Paul after his Damascus road encounter with Jesus. Ananias was both a Christian and a devout Jew who kept the law, respected by his fellow Jews. He obeyed God’s command to visit Saul (Paul), the persecutor of the church. This obedience played a crucial role in birthing the greatest missionary in history.
Key Terms Made Simple
- Ananias: A Jewish Christian living in Damascus who kept the law and was respected by fellow Jews. He obeyed God’s command to deliver His message to Paul
- Devout: Someone who genuinely believes in God and lives according to that faith. A life where words and actions align
- The Righteous One: A title referring to Jesus Christ, meaning He is without sin and perfectly righteous
- Witness: A person who tells others what they have personally seen and heard
- Baptism: A ceremony that publicly declares faith in Jesus and marks the beginning of a new life
Key Expressions to Notice
- “A devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there”
- Ananias was a Christian who also kept the law as a devout Jew. His life demonstrated consistency between words and actions, earning trust from his peers. This is why God used him for such an important task.
- “The God of our ancestors has chosen you”
- The phrase “has chosen” indicates Paul was already in God’s plan even when he was persecuting the church. God sees not who we are now, but who we will become.
- “You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard”
- Ananias didn’t know what Paul would become, but he shared the vision God gave him. This message to one person would later bear fruit that transformed the entire world.
- “And now what are you waiting for?”
- Our response to God’s calling should be “now,” not “later.” Delaying obedience can mean missing the opportunity.
Main Points of the Text
- God’s Work Through Ordinary People: Ananias wasn’t a special leader but an ordinary Christian living in Damascus. Yet through his obedience, God raised up Paul, a great apostle. Our small acts of obedience can create great history.
- The Power of a Life That Builds Trust: Ananias lived according to the law and was respected by his peers. His faithful life made the message he delivered to Paul more credible. The gospel we share must first be proven by our lives.
- Faith in the Invisible Future: When Ananias met Paul, Paul was still a persecutor of the church. But Ananias believed in what God would accomplish through Paul and obeyed. We too must see people not as they appear now, but through God’s future plans for them.
- One Person Creating Thousandfold Fruit: Ananias shared the gospel with one person—Paul. That one person later planted countless churches, wrote nearly half of the New Testament, and spread the gospel throughout the world. We cannot know when, how, or how abundantly the seeds we plant today will bear fruit.
Applying to My Life
- Today’s Obedience, Tomorrow’s Fruit: When Ananias overcame his fear to visit Saul, he didn’t know what results his obedience would bring. We too cannot know what fruit our small acts of obedience today will bear in 10 or 20 years. Let’s obey even when we can’t see the results.
- Seeing Future Potential, Not Present Appearance: Ananias saw Saul the persecutor, but believed in what God would accomplish through him. Let’s not see the people we meet now (youth, students, colleagues) only as they are today, but imagine who they might be in 10 years.
- Investing Fully in Each Individual: Ananias delivered God’s message to just “one person”—Paul. That one person led thousands upon thousands of souls to the Lord. Let’s treasure each person before us and plant gospel seeds in them. Only God knows how much fruit those seeds will bear.
- Faith Proven Through Life: Ananias was respected as a devout person who lived according to the law. His life gave weight to his words. The gospel I share must also be proven first by my life. Do my actions today testify to the gospel?
Think About It
- Ananias must have visited Saul with a trembling heart. But how joyful must he have been when he later heard that Paul had become a wonderful man of God fulfilling his mission? Ananias had fruit to proudly show Jesus in heaven. Am I preparing fruit to show the Lord when I reach heaven?
- Let’s imagine what the people we’re meeting now might look like in 10 years. Expecting the fruit that will come through them, what seeds am I planting today? Am I perhaps giving up or becoming discouraged by only seeing their present appearance?
- Ananias saw the gospel he shared with one person—Paul—bear fruit thousands and tens of thousands of times over. We cannot know what results today’s work will bring—whether tenfold, hundredfold, or thousandfold. Can we still sow seeds with expectation despite not knowing?
