Scripture: Acts 23:25-30
Today’s Word
25 He wrote a letter as follows: 26 “Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings. 27 This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen. 28 I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin. 29 I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment. 30 When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him.”
(Acts 23:25-30, NIV)
Background
Commander Claudius Lysias was the Roman military officer responsible for the garrison in Jerusalem. After suppressing the riot surrounding Paul and learning of a plot by more than forty Jews to assassinate him, Lysias now transfers Paul to a higher authority, Governor Felix, with an official letter.
In the Roman Empire, when transferring a prisoner to a superior, an official document was required. This letter was not merely a report but also served as a protective document for Lysias himself. If anything went wrong with Paul, this letter would prove that he had fulfilled his responsibilities and was not at fault.
Key Terms Made Simple
- Commander (Tribune): A Roman military officer who commanded approximately 1,000 soldiers, equivalent to a battalion commander today.
- Governor: The highest Roman authority in a province, representing the emperor with complete military, administrative, and judicial power.
- Sanhedrin: The supreme Jewish religious council consisting of 71 religious leaders who judged matters concerning Jewish law.
Key Expressions to Notice
-
“I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen” (v. 27)
-
“There was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment” (v. 29)
-
“I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him” (v. 30)
Main Points of the Text
-
The Commander’s Self-Protection: Claudius Lysias justifies his actions while partially distorting the facts. He claims he rescued Paul knowing he was a Roman citizen, but actually learned this afterward.
-
Paul’s Innocence Declared: The commander clearly states that Paul committed no crime under Roman law. This is merely a matter of Jewish religious law.
-
God’s Providential Protection: The letter written from selfish motives—to protect himself—becomes an official document that protects Paul. God uses even the imperfect actions of people for His purposes.
Applying to My Life
-
God Uses Every Situation: The commander acted for his own benefit, yet his decision became a means of protecting Paul and spreading the gospel to Rome. God can use the difficult situations in my life, even others’ selfish actions, for good purposes.
-
Waiting Time Is Growing Time: Paul begins a long journey from Jerusalem to Caesarea to Rome. This waiting period was not wasted. At each stage, he gained opportunities to share the gospel with governors, kings, and military commanders. The seasons of waiting I experience, the unwanted circumstances, may be God’s preparation process.
-
Perfect Plans Through Imperfect People: God doesn’t use only perfect people. Even the self-serving commander and the bribe-seeking governor (who appears later) play roles within God’s plan. My own imperfections and the limitations of those around me cannot stop God’s providence.
Think About It
-
Are there unwanted situations or delayed plans in your life? Consider what good purposes God might be accomplishing through them.
-
Is there someone making things difficult for you, or a situation that seems unfair? Can you view it as potentially part of God’s larger plan?
-
If the difficulties you’re currently experiencing are preparing and growing you for God’s kingdom purposes, what attitude should you have during this season?
