Scripture: Acts 26:19-23
Today’s Word
“So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds. That is why some Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me. But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen—that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.” (Acts 26:19-23, NIV)
Background
Paul continues his defense before King Agrippa. After describing his encounter with Jesus on the Damascus road, he explains how that meeting transformed his life. Paul emphasizes that he didn’t simply have a personal religious experience, but received a clear commission from God and has lived in obedience to it. He preached to the Jews first, then to the Gentiles, and this is exactly why the Jews tried to kill him. However, he confesses that through God’s help, he has survived until now and continues to bear witness.
Key Terms Made Simple
- Vision: A special revelation or message that God shows to a person. In Paul’s case, it refers to his direct encounter with the risen Jesus on the Damascus road.
- Repentance: More than just feeling sorry for wrongdoing, it means completely changing one’s thinking and life direction to turn toward God.
- Testimony: Telling others about what you have personally experienced and witnessed. Paul testified as a witness who met the risen Jesus.
- Christ: The Greek expression for Messiah, meaning “the anointed one,” referring to the Savior sent by God.
Key Expressions to Notice
-
“I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven”
-
“Demonstrate their repentance by their deeds”
-
“To small and great alike”
-
“What the prophets and Moses said would happen”
Main Points of the Text
-
Obedience to Heavenly Revelation: Paul could not refuse the revelation from God he received on the Damascus road, and obedience to it became the direction of his life.
-
Systematic Gospel Proclamation: He preached the gospel sequentially, starting in Damascus, then Jerusalem, throughout Judea, and finally to the Gentiles. This shows strategic and dedicated ministry.
-
Ministry Continued Despite Persecution: Despite the Jews’ attempts to kill him, he was able to continue his testimony through God’s help. This demonstrates both God’s protection and Paul’s commitment to completing his mission.
-
Testimony Based on Scripture: Paul’s message was based on the prophecies of Moses and the prophets—the Old Testament. He emphasized that Christ’s suffering, resurrection, and becoming a light for both Jews and Gentiles had already been prophesied.
Applying to My Life
-
Obedience to God’s Calling: Like Paul, we each have a calling God has given to our lives. Whether large or small, uncomfortable or comfortable, we must live in obedience to God’s guidance. What is God’s voice that I need to obey today?
-
Unity of Faith and Action: True repentance brings not only a change of mind but also a change of action. We need to examine whether our confession of faith is manifesting in our daily choices and actions. How is my faith specifically showing up as changed behavior?
-
Mission Sustained Through Difficulties: Paul did not stop his testimony even under threat of death. We also need the patience to continue what God has entrusted to us without giving up when facing difficulties or opposition. What am I tempted to give up right now, and does God want me to continue it?
Think About It
-
Like Paul’s expression “I was not disobedient,” have you ever felt God’s calling so clearly and powerfully in your life? How did you respond at that time?
-
How does the phrase “demonstrate their repentance by their deeds” speak to your life today? Are there areas where your faith is not showing up in concrete actions?
-
Paul testified to “both small and great.” Do you discriminate or choose people when sharing the gospel? Who are the people you find it difficult to share the gospel with?
